To be a man, or not to be...
In my never ending fight with ad companies who define masculinity as a mechanism for turning people into consumers errrr selling products & ideas, I have found a new favorite ad pitch. On Monday Night Football tonight a TV ad for the upcoming DVD release of Mamma Mia ad states "Be a man, buy her a musical". I'll stop here to ask the questions. Does the purchasing of a musical DVD make me a man? Does not purchasing the DVD make me less of a man? What does it all mean?

I just published the biggest picture in the history of blogging.
I would like to hear this ad in its entirety before I comment on this blog.
An risk not making an ass of myself... the hell with that.
Yeah, I don't know what to say about that. It puts buying your girlfriend a musical on the same plane as buying her some tampons. However, I think they were trying to relate it more directly to buying her flowers - something women usually want and guys may be reluctant to buy because it shows their softer side.
It's kind of like when Jewelers advertise that diamonds are merely for women, when we know full well that rappers like them too (it's a joke. Don't hate).
Am I offended by the generalization, no. Do I think people will fall for it, no. Do I appreciate the effort, always.
I'm also proud to say that I am not man enough to buy this DVD for my wife. No matter how big the picture is that you published, eric.
